I supply 34 large but light parasols to volunteers who carry them onto the playa to offer shade to people, accompanying them for awhile as they tour the art installations during the heat of the day. The Temporate Zone is the basecamp, consisting of a large origami-lke tent that serves as a 24-hour chillspace and meetingplace for the Shadebearers. It's colorfully lit at night (lasers, kaleidescope projector, liquid projector, gobos, fiberoptic, blacklight, and a LOT of other lighting, a subdued sound system with choice music, soft carpets, furry chairs, velvet cushions, and two well-placed large hookahs. There's a well-equipped kitchen, a couple showers, an evap pond, separate dining tent, and a wardrobe/dressing room complete with costumes to share. I'll also have a ton of really exotic fabric onhand, and a sewing machine. No camp fees, just contribute your share to food and drink, and your share of camp responsibilities like cooking and cleanup, serving cocktails, hosting guests, and of course, you gotta be a Shadebearer for a few hours a day. You'll make a lot of friends, provide a public service, and have a lot of fun, and it won't take any more time than you want it to. After all, you have to experience the rest of Burning Man, too.

Camp Inspiratum is hosting a party to celebrate our new space in Gold River. It may sound urban but it is a cozy little 1/2 acre of dust and rock and an amazing shop which by day is a productive business for Zoom Zoom and Captain Chuck and at night becomes our workshop for projects which we now call 'Laboratorium'.

We want to share our new digs with everyone this Saturday, June 14th. Since we are close to the river, early in the day we are having a rafting trip down the American River and then as the day starts to cool off we will pitch camp and settle in for a night of good music and amazing people.

Below is the original invitation, if you have any questions send me a message.

Captain Chuck
Inspiratum 2008

It has officially become time to unveil the shop, open the doors, welcome in all of our friends old and new.

Our new place sits on 1/2 acre with plenty of room to be festive, camp, spin fire, have fun, listen to Jay play the guitar or Red Bone spin some tunes or whatever. So here is how it will work:

All are welcome to camp overnight. Bring a motorhome or a tent or a car or sleep on the ground, there are showers, toilets and plenty of room. Even the consistency of the dusty yard is strikingly similar to playa dust!

The party festivities will begin around 7:00 pm with a barbecue, food, drink, and relaxing in the afternoon sun. As night opens up we will party Inspiratum style. For those of you who have been there you know that this means great people, a little bit of craziness, and maybe some fire here and there.

Early in the day we will be rafting! Yes, rafting... We are very close to the American River and we will drive everyone down to the river rafting rental place, rent rafts, load them up and float down the river. This will cost about $20 per person for the raft rental and the bus ride home. The cool thing about this is that you don't have to carry any gear home! If you have your own floaty and can arrange a ride back, that is cool too and even cheaper!

Once we get back, you can pitch camp, chill out, run around naked or whatever strikes your fancy while we gear up for a barbecue... then begins the party.

Camp Inspiratum is hosting this party at the same location where we hold our Laboratorium nights. This is where we open the shop for projects, camaraderie, and soaking up some inspiration. During the day this shop functions as the home of Autoshield and also as the world's headquarters for Public Safety Innovation. Our gift to the community is this party; so come and have fun, respect the space, leave no trace, and help us to keep this party crazy fun and still a little bit down to earth.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Ok, so we've already discussed moving these to a different venue ... private locals ... because well, Pyramid service and billing sucked. So, that stated I want to postulate a slight change in date as well because.....

the first Saturday of July happens to fall on the Fourth of Julplaya weekend - I know not all of us go, but enough do, plus for some odd reason that's a big family weekend. I'll be out of town, camping and vending my soaps. So, what do ya'll think of July 12 instead? and ...who's hosting?

and now August... ya'll can have the August social on the regular first Saturday (Aug 2nd) if you want.... but I'd really really prefer it if you could migrate out of town, and go to the City (yeah, SF... Sac surely aint a City, it's just a city). My reason, you ask.... well, the Temple of Community (art project I'm very involved with this year) is hosting a fundraiser at Il Pirata, 2007 16th Street Potrero Hill, San Francisco, CA - 415-626-2626 - 9pm to 2am... we could really use your support and participation... so come on down!! http://tribes.tribe.net/templeofcommunity
SO, given that, I propose that we move August's social to Aug 9th?

Skirblah was brilliant when he suggested still going to a public venue every other month that way if there was anyone leery about coming their first time, they might be more relaxed going out in public. That Skir is so smart.

Someone volunteers their house.....we each bring a food item to share, we bring our own drinks (not just a bottle of something....bring what you need to make your drinks, we don't want to put any burden or expectations on our host). Pretty simple and there is the added bonus of not leaving with a $40 bill afterwards. We're burners, we don't have money!

We already got an offer for someone to open up their home (I'll wait for you to chime in though in case you changed your mind T), and we are also willing, although we would only be available to do that when we don't have our kids. Anyone else out there with a good space that would like to throw themselves into the volunteer pool? Anyone have any thoughts or opinions that we might not have considered and really should?

Hello fellow Theme Camp organizers (and others).

The Rue Morgue and Temple of Community would like to offer you a challenge of a different ilk. Some of your crew may already be on this project but we'd like to see a represented piece from your camp.

When we found out that Best wasn't doing a temple this year we started to embark on creating one for the community that each camp could be part of.

We are building a 20 - 30 foot origami crane from wood to burn. It will a place of mourning, deep thought and release. To say goodbye to loved ones that have left this world.

We are asking various camps to build their own 5 foot version that can be placed next to the main structure in a circle to show that no mater how different we are together we are a community.

We will be happy to send you scaled down drawings but in the end its your art piece and we'd like you to make it yours. Use the skeleton as a base.

If you are interested in this challenge please contact me or Gothalot.

THIS OFFER IS OPEN TO UNREGISTERED AS WELL AS REGISTERED THEME CAMPS.

FOR Temple of Community INFO or to JOIN us go to: tribes.tribe.net/templeofcommunity

We also need financial donations to make it happen!

Thank you for your continued support.
Captain Chuck and Zoom Zoom hosted the Burningman Equinox party in Rancho Cordova last night and I had a blast. They covered all the basics good music, food, lots of drinks, fire, amazing art/toys, hool-a-hoops, and the best were the people. I don't think I saw anyone show up with out something for the party . I didn't have to squint my eyes very much to be back on the playa. I could feel that special energy that burners create when ever they gather. I met lots of new people I think I made some new friends I got to ride a turtle and a tricycle but I didn't ride the palm tree ... it looked shady to me.( haha I Punned). I put up some pictures for your viewing pleasure.
I wanted to thanks to Captain Chuck, Harmony, and Zoom Zoom and every one for such a great time. You guys are the best of what Burningman is kind, generous, creative, and you can boogie.

Hello all!

I just signed up on Tribe to connect with all of my local fellow burners. I'm a long timer, starting in the early 90's. I stopped going for a few years. Don't ask what I was thinking!!! I still haven't figured that out either!! However, I returned the last two years with friends and it felt like a home I had missed. I'm planning on going again this year. Every time I've gone, which is about 10 times now, it's been with a group of close friends and I've never done the theme camp experience. No, I'm not a grandpa, I'm only 36. I had some friends join up with Lamplighters the last couple of years, but they've become so massive, structures, and are right in the middle of center camp which is like camping near a bicycle freeway. Besides, they're mostly in SF but spread out quite a bit, so you'd get to know very few people in the theme camp before getting out on the playa.

I've always wanted to help work on a project, but most of my friends either end up short on time, short on money, or both, so the ideas and plans seem to fizzle out. I'd like to hook up with an established theme camp this year. Hopefully, some local burners near Sac who can meet up, hang out, work on a project, party, and get to know each other.

Please let me know if you know of or belong to any local theme camps? I'm looking forward to meeting up with everyone at one of the local events. When I left SF, I was wondering where all the burners had gone!

Just a couple of thoughts on the venue though.....the coffee and la chica that was working were great.....but the food selection is sparce (muffins and breads only), there is limited seating and very, very, very cold in the building. Even with the space heater, there was no warmth with the windows and doors open. Burrrrrr. I think it would be a great spot to chill at when it's warmer because the overall laid-back vibe was great as was the coffee and the gal working.

BUT, they are starting at 210.00 out the gate... thats the first tier,

2nd tier prices are225.00, and 3rd tier are250.00

there are 10, 000 tickets available at each of the 3 tiers.

the price for tickets, while supplies last (hmmm, does that mean they are finally cappin ticket sales?) is 295.00

there will be 3500 tickets at a discounted "Scholarship" price... and I dont know what that price is.. I am betting about 185.00 though.. Don;t quote me on that, but seems likely, given the other prices...

if ya want a scholarship ticket go to tickets.burningman.com and READ IT COMPLETELY, if ya don't follow the instructions exactly ya won;t get the scholarship, and don't procastinate on this.. there are only 3500 of the discount tickets available..

I Recommend ya do Will Call, that way ya dont have to worry about them being lost in the mail.... but if ya must hold them in your hands.. then ABSOLUTELY pay the extra price to insure them.....

I can't tell you the number of horror stories over the years of lost tickets.... but it has and does happen every year...

YES!!! we are going.. BUT, it is indeed our last year... so, hope ya all can make it... and help us celebrate our 12th and final burningman...

it is truly an experience one should not miss...

Be sure your pay pal accounts are set up and ready to go before Jan 16th
the last thing ya want is a pay pal malfunction on ticket day..

part of the burningman experience is scorin those tickets......

see ya there...

So, January 5th lets do pizza.... here's where the locals get to chime in.....

With that in mind, does anyone have a favorite pizza joint in the mid/downtown area that will accommodate the large numbers that we'll eventually swell to (see, I'm being optimistic here)? I'd prefer to keep the location somewhere near down/midtown Sac, because that seems to be a central area for this geographically sprawled out group. I really dont know what the area has to offer, so I'd probably pick a Round Table or some such.... there's gotta be something really good tho

Ok... somehow I'm now the 'official' organizer for the SVB meetings/socials... whatever, I just wanted these things to start up again, so I started choosing places and times to make something happen. Fine, if that makes me official.... again, whatever.

Well, and I think I've done this before, I'm asking for ya'll's opinions in this matter....

should the events be at a local pub/alehouse/pizza joint/etc, or at someone's home?

Personally, I'm rather torn between both.
Public places sound nice because they do not impose upon any host, there should not ever be any conflict with family plans, etc; they are easily accessible by most everyone (although money can be a barrier at times); and it can provide a fixed - and known - location.

Private homes are nice because it is a more intimate environment; typically people can relax more; the bands do not interfere with conversations; people can bring their drink/food of choice and save lots of money doing so, etc......

the downside to private homes is that some people, especially the newer burners, may be intimidated by the 'private party' aspect. That was one of the main reasons that so many of the meetings (socials... gotta switch to socials, they're NOT meetings).... so many of the socials were called at public places - to not exclude anyone. But really, we're BURNERS - we're a pretty welcoming and open lot. Is not the main aspect to the socials to meet new people and forge stronger friendships with those people? would not a better setting be in a comfortable environment?

so, for what it's worth, what are your opinions on these matters? Public socials for SVB, private socials for SVB? I just want us to get together at least once a month - lets forge a community here - there are LOTS of us in this area..... lets get together....

thanks

A ninety-foot tall oil derrick bore spiritless witness to nine gigantic steel humans in various poses of prostration and supplication. Crude Awakening, the installation on the edge of the open playa was called, and throughout the week I found myself vaguely annoyed by this piece. Impressed by the scale and ambition, most certainly, but isn’t that theme overwrought? Yes, we worship petroleum. Surely everybody gets that by now. Even the people running generators all day in their RVs understand that.

So there are those who say that Burning Man is hypocritical, wasteful, hedonistic, and false. They are correct, in their own way, but not as correct as those who, when asked what Burning Man is like, simply shake their heads and fall into gazes faraway, as if remembering a lost love, for Burning Man is nothing if it’s not heartbreaking. To witness how beautiful everyone is when they allow themselves to be free, to see how we all want to dance, to love, to be authentic, and then to return to the antithesis of all of this, the workaday world of anxiety, insecurity, guardedness, where people are who they think they should be rather than who they actually are, this is heartbreak.

But of course, the heart can only break open.

There seems sometimes to be an anticipatory sense that something is going to *happen* at Burning Man. Aside from the hundreds of people you meet, aside from the uncanny synchronicities, aside from the hookups, aside from the startlingly original art, aside from the burning of the man, there is an undefined mysterium tremendum that reverberates through the event, as if the event itself is the center of a vortex that has been pulling you toward it for months, a wormhole that threatens to leave you in a whole new world on the very same planet.

At least, this is what happened to me. I first attended Flipside, a regional burn outside of Austin, Texas, over Memorial Day weekend. As it happened, I walked into Whole Foods on the Thursday prior and promptly ran into a friend who was stocking up on provisions on her way out. She asked me if I was going, and in the supreme confidence of unabashed ignorance, I shrugged and said, “naw, that’s not my scene.” You know, hypocritical, wasteful, hedonistic, false, all that. But she told me I should go if I could find some tickets, and this challenge was at least diverting, and I remembered a friend who’d told me months ago that he had a Flipside ticket but didn’t think he was going so I called him and it turned out he was going after all, so sorry man. No worries, didn’t think I really wanted to go in the first place, but then he calls back a few hours later—his girlfriend had just broken up with him—to see if I still wanted a ticket. Sure, I said, not at all sure, but it’s only forty-five minutes outside of town, and I figured I’d just drive over, walk around and check it out for the night. I grabbed two bananas, two apples, two avocadoes, and two gallons of water and headed out. I arrived back home three days later, having been perfectly provided for, and shining like I’d just witnessed a solar eclipse at sunrise.

But this is all just prologue. The summer following Flipside and preceding Burning Man, I found myself taunted by periodic dreams, difficult to describe but having something to do with a pulse at the center of Burning Man, some ominous storm of consciousness that first swiped me off my feet with Flipside and was now drawing me into a rebirth canal before hurling me into points unknown. One dream in particular I remember clearly: Upon arriving at Burning Man, someone pointed at me friendly and demanded, “why are you here?” I awoke to the echoes of my unhesitant reply: “To completely let go of my former relationship.” As I was still recovering from the splinters of a broken eleven and a half year relationship, there was now no obstacle too great to prevent me from making the 3500 mile round trip to Black Rock City. And as fate would have it, I ran into my former partner two days before I left for Burning Man. A poignant sadness passed between us, but she looked good. She looked fantastic.

But on to Burning Man. The portentous soundtrack upon my arrival happened to be Seal’s “Crazy.” "We’re never gonna survive unless we get a little crazy." An auspicious opening to a crazy week spectacular, though it did not really begin until I made my early pilgrimage to the Temple to write my prayer, citing Rumi, "All I ask is that you forever remember me as loving you." After that, my week began in earnest, and I could regale you with tales all night long and my eyes would sparkle and enthusiasm would strain my voice, but let me just tell you about the night of the burn itself. Atop Abraxas the Dragamuffin, a brilliantly-realized work of rolling art in action owing itself to the effort of the Solarians, I had an excellent view of the burning of the man. I wish I could say that it blew my mind, but really it was just a big fireworks and laser show surrounded by the Zippos of the 21st century, thousands of glowing LCD screens as the assembled watched it via the viewfinders of their digital cameras, saving instead of savoring the moment. Fun, yes, but missing was the mystery. Of course, what I did not yet realize was that the burning of the man is not the climax of Burning Man. It is only the blast-off.

It was in the disorderly dispersion after the burning of the man that I began to feel the pulse I had known in my dreams, an emergent rhythm simmering beneath our feet, and we reconvened a couple of hours later at Crude Awakening out on the edge of the open playa to witness the burning of the oil derrick. Again atop Abraxas, I am huddled and cuddled with shipmates reincarnated from a glorious pirate ship, fireworks and lasers, oh my, and then… and then… I don’t know if I gasped or if all the air was sucked out of my lungs by the detonation of the largest controlled propane explosion in the world, a Guinness I guess, 900 gallons of NASA jet fuel and 2000 gallons of liquid propane and oh my god a thousand foot high mushroom cloud churning hellish red and demon black, 2.4 gigawatts of energy, just enough to power the entire Bay Area for one minute (or, come to think of it, two trips back to the future in Doc’s De Lorean…), and the only thing more wow fantastic than this is the firelit faces around me, fireshadows flickering across their wide-open eyes, transfixed in apocalyptic wonder.

And you know, the word apocalypse derives from the Greek word, apokalyptein, which means, “to unveil.” And there was indeed a renting of the veil that night, an opening into a realm where every encounter is authentic, and consequently, deeply meaningful. I had painted the word IMPULSE across my chest in fluorescent white, and as the night wore on I discovered that this was as much invitation as invocation. I was hugged, kissed, licked, squeezed, nibbled, massaged, hit on, and slashed with chocolate, and before long I became the impulse, daring the impulse from whomever chose my presence. During one extended moment, I shared an hour long shoving loving shouting kissing encounter with a woman bursting out of her chrysalis. She showed me how tightly our spirits are crammed into this life, how our bodies are but leotards for our soul, and how our soul just wants to dance, and dance we damn did and nighttime disappeared into blackness all around and there was she and there was me orbiting around one another like Shiva and Shakti growling and grinning across the galaxy, and this is not even the climax.

Finding my way to Opulent Temple, I’m aware of an uncanny sensation of familiarity, of recognizing everything that is happening, a sort of “oh yeah, this is the part where I share an extended shamanic dance on the open playa,” or, “oh yeah, this is when I kiss a pregnant woman’s belly,” or, “oh yeah, this is when I throw it down with a dozen other dancers at Opulent Temple,” as if it all happened in one bright shining moment, a big bang, and life is a vastly reduced awareness of that moment that is right now, and gods and goddesses are dancing the dance their bodies have been dying for, impulses pulsing timeless and tireless and oh yeah this is the part when the dance floor opens around me and surrounds me and eyes are so bright like stars of the night and I am between now and nowever and we are so fucking lucky to be alive.

A dragon breathes fire in the distance and I heed the call of my shipmates and make my way toward the mothership, noting the sky rosy on the horizon and thinking holy cow what a night but it has yet hardly begun. Abuzz with activity, setting the generator a-rumble, bolting into place a platform for spinning, samurai warriors are striding about, preparing for the final assault upon the ego panting upon the periphery, for we have sailed out upon the dead calm of this dry lakebed to do battle only with ourselves, and we won, and we are a float in our own victory parade, and Bassnectar is spinning and people come together to dance the dawn awake and my are we alive today as the sunrise pales next to the light shining out of the eyes of everyone and how are we so beautiful and Seth good brother that he is grabs my shoulder and points to Crude Awakening and do you see how now that the derrick is burned they’re actually worshipping the sunrise?

And I would have wept but my grin would permit me only to dance for I was not yet done and oh yeah this is the part where I’m dancing on the catwalk and a sparkling woman joins me and writhes in close but then something in me closes imperceptibly and I humor her for a couple of minutes before dancing my way away and down the ladder I go and I take three steps and happen to glance back and she’s leaning over the railing and glaring at me in aggressive compassion and where do you think you’re going get back up here and I comply yes I do and regard the dance proper ‘cause you’re not really dancing till you imagine that you are making love and I clearly see how I have been breaking the circuit of sexuality in my life ever since my split and she doesn’t know how she healed me and I don’t know how I healed anyone around me but it happened all the same and the deejay lays down Frou Frou’s “Let Go,” and an exhilaration of epic healing gasps into atmosphere and we dance, and dance, and dance the wild divine.

Epilogue: The next night, during the Temple burn, I watched in somber fascination as it collapsed, sighing satisfied as a wave of cheers swept round and round. Later, I was having a snack with a friend and she asked me if I had let go of what I wanted to let go of and it occurred to me that my former relationship had not crossed my mind all week, not even during the Temple burn. I forgot to let go, I said, realizing that letting go requires no effort, no remembrance, and certainly no action. It requires only release, and acceptance, and that I forgot to let go only demonstrates my success in doing so.

Thank you to all who shared this experience with me. It is surely the morning we will return to upon our death.

Be your biggest,

Impulse, a.k.a. Tony Vigorito

Next month I'm thinking it'd be better to move away from Second Saturday ... maybe First Saturday ... and then we'll stick with the day, time, and location.... speaking of, this location was chosen only because it's where we had the largest meet last year..... I really could care less - but this one is set.

To remedy that, Myself and another person are endeavoring to create the Black rock City Brewers Guild Brewpub (actual name TBD). It seems to be a daunting task to be sure, so I am hoping that there are some other homebrewers that would be interested in joining this experiment. The details aren't yet worked out, but there are some tentitive ideas. If you are interested, I invite you to join our tribe http://tribes.tribe.net/brcbg and help with the planning and eventual implementation. You need not be a brewer to participate.
My name is Sarah (aka Crescent) and I am going to be moving to Sacramento in about two weeks and I am looking to meet new people and keep myself busy. I don't know many people in Sacramento and I would love to find a community of artistic, open minded, spiritual, environmentally conscious, and supportive people. Also, I really want to take a beginning poi spinning class when I move. Does anyone know of any classes starting in mid October or after? Or any other community oriented or artistic events? Black Rock City is surely my home, and I'd like to find a community of people to help me bring the spirit of BM with me into the default world. I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks.

I have a fellow friend, many of you may know him from Burning man as Halcyon. He has a weekly group hug called hug nation. Halcyon is taking the group hug on tour, and is looking for a place for a good group hug. Does anyone know a good location in Sacramento where we can all get together for a group hug?

What is hug nation?(www.hugnation.com)
Hug Nation is a world-wide Group Hug.

Those pesky oceans keep us from doing the weekly hug physically, so we do it virtually. Thousands of people around the world gather in front of computers to hug themselves and the people around them at a set time. Rather than a shared physical space, it is a shared mental space.

Regardless of where you are on Tuesday at 1-pm (PST), you can join the Group Hug.

Squeeze yourself in your car or in the supermarket. Hug your spouse or co-worker. Just visualize the thousands worldwide who are joining you at that moment.

Think of it as a sort of prayer -- a communal expression of compassion. It is a weekly reminder that we are connected and we all far more similar than we are different. Everyone can use a hug.

Greetings

My name is Mr. Bear.
My Burning Man background is:
Started going to Burning Man in 95.
First Sacramento group coordinator, then I pass it on to Allen of Horse Cow.
Along with my wonderful friends we spent 97 - 99 in center camp and created many large-scale art projects. Then with the happenings of 911 and the legal problems that came with playing with big fire, and me becoming jaded I quite doing art projects and spent the next few years learning about myself and became a teacher of spiritual tools such as Neuro Linguistic Programing, hypnosis, fire and glass walking.

As I was watching the amazing firework show before the derrick when up, I saw a series of fireworks go off in the colors of the American flag. I turned to those in our group and said, “there is the theme for next year”. I had a feeling we were being given a message. And when the derrick finally went up, I knew what it was. For me it was, "this is my country and I should be able to live it as those who created it intended".

This years theme is the "American Dream". You can see it on the front page of the Burning Man website. I was announced Monday, Labor Day.
I am seeing so much negative feedback already about this year’s theme. I want to get this on the Sacramento and Foothills list now so you can get another view of this year’s theme. The theme is what it is and it is up to each one of us whether we are going to look at it as positive or negative. It is your choice and YOU are responsible for what you make it.

If we truly want to honor those that created and died for this country it is our duty to live out our dreams and if we want to blow shit up in the desert, as long as it is done safely, we have the right to.

The American Dream is not about Bush, the war, politics, inflation, global warming or any of that other bull crap. The American Dream is about what we truly want deep in our hearts. It is that which we are afraid to say. We can so easily say what we don’t want, but it is fear that keeps us from saying what we do want.

This year’s theme has got me excited again. For the first time in years I do want to wave the flag. I am tired of watching those who are really operating in fear wave the flag. Why have those of us who really want the rights that our forefathers gave us, become so against waving the flag?
Our government does not own the flag, we do.

I have wanted a change in Burning Man and I feel this is it. We now have a chance to change the world around us to what we want. We don’t have to vote, we don’t have to go out and campaign, all we have to do is start living our dream and be happy. Look around us most of us are now having fun and living a life better than 90% of the world. Now it is time to kick it up to where we really want and not live in the fear that others have placed on us.

I am going to be posting my project for next year and my dream shortly. Being honest like everyone else, it scares the hell out of me to publicly post and say my dream. But it is my American Dream and unless I overcome my fear and live the life that Martin Luther King talked about, I will always live in fear. If I don’t live my American Dream I will actually be disgracing those men and women who died for my rights to live my dream and to be able to go out in the desert blow up stuff and party my ass off.

I will be sharing with you shortly.

What is your American Dream?
